Retired Players to Staff

Post by cdidman »

Okay, this is a question using Yzerman as an example. There are some players or coaches/staff that you can't click on to get more information. Such as Yzerman, you can't click on him. Why? I edited him to be in a position where I can now click on him to view his bio and history, but why can't I offer him a contract for a different coaching position? I also notice this on some player who retire, you can't click on them. Will these type of player/staff ever be able to be offered a coaching position? I would like to have Yzerman one day be my coach.

Thanks everyone.

I think they're just not interested on becoming staff. They're retired to start a knitting shop in downtown Detroit, just leave 'em be!

I've edited the title of this thread, because this is really about players retiring, not about mr. Yzerman per say.

yep some retire and are only regenerated as players. Others retire and become coaches, or some type of staff...and are also regenerated as players. Not sure what would make it more likely for a player to become staff once retires from playing, or if there is any way to do it in the editor. Since I have never even downloaded any editors, this is obvious.

Has anyone ever had an ex-NHL player turn out a good staff?

I usually check all the players who go into the Hall of Fame, and the ones who stay as staff allways have horrible ratings.

Same here. Any time I get the HOF news message, I check the player to see if he's available, and if so, how good he is. I can't recall ever seeing anyone who was any good. I think I vaguely remember hiring Sergei Fedorov to a junior team as an ass't coach, but I forget most of that save, so I can't really say for sure.

In a Sens game of mine i've got Rob Blake as an assistant, and he's pretty great. Also had Teppo Numminen as assistant for my Austrian national team (actually he's still with them and i'm not). Seems like i've been just lucky so far, which sucks, because i was hoping for having a full staff of former nhl greats at some point...

I think only P.Coffey was quite decent, but that's a given from the Day 1. Of course, its always nice to have the likes of Yzerman and Chelios on the board, but IMHO their position to become staff members is not as advantageous as it might seem. I have my own theory about that. These players have actually achieved almost everything in the game, which might negate any rationale or motivation to continue their career (if the player is not on a pace to break any NHL record). And the last perfect example of that is S.Niedermayer or Selanne. On the other side, ordinary players usually are quite motivated and eager to prove something. Probably, AI thinks they have an edge on coaching and that's why we can see super coaches with unfamiliar names. Any thought about that?

Sounds pretty logical to me.

Though, on the other hand, it's possible to say that the top players are the ones more dedicated to the sport they love playing... thus making them more likely to want to continue their involvement once they can't play anymore.

What Crocker says is somewhat true in real life. Save guys like Wayne, Stevie Wonder...it is becoming less the case I think that in real life stars do not continue to work in the game in some fashion.

However---in the game, I don't think this is the case. Sometimes stars regen as staff, sometimes they do not. I am not sure how much time the developers put into deciding who would become staff and who would not. For some reason I have it in my head they said it was random. Not sure though.

It is also possible to sign old players as coaches etc. before they retire. I have not tried it myself, but maybe that makes a difference. You get the option when renewing their contract.

Has anyone had luck with this?

Edit:
If it is random, and you really really want your star player to continue as a coach, then one could cheat and save before offering the position, and try multiple times until he gets good attributes. I would not normally "cheat" like this, but for role-play sake I might do it with a small thing like this - it would be very cool to have your franchise star player continue as a good assistant coach and then go onward to head coach later on :)

I have been able to sign older players to being a player/coach on the team. Usually if I do that and let them stay on the team for a few years, then I offer them just a scouting position or whatever their attributes offer and they usually accept.

Unless of course they have been producing great numbers. That is when it is hard to get them to take the job. Seems like if you get Chelios and get him playing well on your team. The guy will stay on your team forever, but if he does bad here and there, then you can offer him a coaching job.

I have never been able to get him to accept it on the game, but no reason for others not to try.

I've got Lyle Odelein as a wonderful asst. coach, head coach potential. 15+ stats everywhere, many in green.

John LeClair is now the GM for Odessa in the CHL. He averages over 12 in ratings if you take out his three coaching stats at 4-3-3. Could not coach a team of 12 years old but definately a good GM, Assnt. GM, or Scout for a AHL, ECHL, or CHL team.

In 05 I could never get Mario Lemieux to play more than 1 season. He would even ask for an extension and then retire anyway. The bright side was he always turned into a competent assistant coach.

Goldberg, thanks for that tip on John LeClair. I tend to play my games in EHM with many CHL teams.

I grew up watching the CHL, so I never get that far away from it in life.
