I think most people were anticipating Kovalev going to the Pens. He's a good fit there for a playoff run. I think playing on a team with a chance to do something will help him step up his play.

Atlanta trades Sopel and Dawes to Montreal for Ben Maxwell and a 4th round pick. Nice trade for Atlanta, Maxwell is a good prospect and they didn't need Sopel now that they a better and younger player in Mark Stuart.

He is an UFA this summer. I think he'll take a final year in the KHL and then retire.

Btw. does the whole cap hit transfer with Kovalev in the trade? I mean hes gotten probably 3/4 of his salary from Ottawa already, how do these things go generally? I just realised I've never really thought about it.

I think that Penguins will pay whole yearly salary. In Kovalev's case it's 5 mills. Penguins has cap space, cause Malkin is on injured reserve to the end of the season.

In fact, that 5 mills. is yearly salary (for 12 months), but player will get the payment only for 10 months. Kovalev's real salary is 4.16 mills.

Yeah, but Pittsburgh will only pay his salary from the day they traded for him. Ottawa has already payed the rest

Atlanta has resigned Mark Stuart with a 3-year contract, worth 5,1 mills.

Florida traded Dennis Wideman to Washington for Jake Hauswirth and 3rd round pick.

Not sure what Atl is thinking here....

The Thrashers challenge should be started from the beginning with their new roster after the trade deadline! I think they're worse now than when the challenge started :ha!:

Congrats on 1,000! I've never heard of Jake Hauswirth but I'm guessing it didn't take Florida long to figure out that Wideman isn't very good. Even though Horton is very streaky, I'm glad the Bruins were able to get Horton and Campbell for Wideman and our 1st in 2010.

Atlanta was smart to re-sign Mark Stuart. He's a good solid, physical, stay-at-home defenseman. He's tough as nails and sticks up for his teammates. He's the kind of guy they need in Atlanta. His brother used to play in the Atlanta organization but I don't know how long ago he left. Of course, Atlanta's coach, Craig Ramsay is very familiar with Mark Stuart since he used to be a Bruins assistant. He knows he's a quality player. I honestly wish the Bruins could have kept him but he was a casualty of the salary cap. Adam McQuaid fills the same role but for less money.

I just don't get this move. How old is Dvorak now? You'd think Atlanta would have at least tried to trade Bergfors for a prospect or a pick (not a 5th).

Sure, Atlanta post-trade-deadline would've been an even tougher challenge. Or what about a post-trade-deadline Florida Panthers? They've been in fire sale mode.

So with the win in Ottawa the other day, the Bruins won 6 straight games on the road. This is the first time they had done this since 1972!

Make that 7 straight, Looch gets a late GWG against Tampa, that's his 28th. Good night for him, beat Brewer cleanly in a fight before and had a huge hit on Purcell (?) along the boards. Downie and Bergenheim are major tools for various reasons.

Yup! And even though I was born in 72, it happened earlier in the year and I wasn't born until the end of the year. So it hasn't happened in my lifetime. We're due!

That Lucic goal was nice! He was at a bad angle and he still managed the shot. Plus, it was nice to see Krejci paying the price in front of the net. I also liked the fire I saw in Horton. He's getting involved. I know he's streaky but he's been dying to be a part of an NHL playoff team and I think he's going to turn it on.
