Performance is always the first guide line I use when it comes to prospects.
If i have a 20 year old player, who has solid NHL ready ratings and he isn't performing in the AHL, i send him back to Junior.
However, If you bring up a kid and put him in a position to succeed, such as a top line, he may thrive.
Always use your camps to test your prospects, see where they are, don't always listen to your coaches and scouts.

The player I was talking about just won these trophies in the WHL:
WHL Star Player Award
Bob Clarke Trophy
Four Broncos Memorial Trophy
WHL Plus Minus Award
Jim Piggot Memorial Trophy
Doug Wickenheiser Memorial Trophy
He pretty much swept every trophy he was eligible for...Do i leave him in the WHL for another season or bring him to the NHL to play on my 2nd line with Milan Michalek - Joe Thornton

Usually I would leave the player in the WHL but your guy seems like he is ready to make the jump to the NHL. Just make sure he gets lots of playing time.

I'd AHL him. I'm not a fan of Junior leagues straight to the NHL. No matter who they are...

Alright, thanks for the feedback guys. I think what im going to do is take control of my AHL team, and put him, Tavares and Torrey Mitchell on the 1st line. Then i'll see how they are doing after 25-30 games or so and re-assess what to do from there.

Well, I forgot i couldn't send him to the AHL yet because he's still 19. So i sent him back to Red Deer for one more season and then Tavares was sent to the AHL.

LightRocket wrote:Generally, I send Bobby Ryan back to Juniors, when I get him. You'd be surprised. The biggest boost in attributes that he usually gets for me is when he's playing for his Juniors team.
Just to draw the lesson of this case: I sent him back and he really started to develop. Not very fast, but now both his offensive and defensive skills have been increasing. So performance is not always the most important factor. His average rating was over 7.50 in the NHL and was almost point/game after a half season.
Btw, I'm still interested in how can I take control of the farm team... By adding a new GM?

What do you guys recommend for goaltender development?
I have a 20-year old prospect playing in the Marlies (Edgar Redkis) and he is amazing - Has a record of 40-1 and an insane GAA (1.37) I believe. His blocker/glove stats are about 18's. He turns 21 in April and I was going to try him as my starting goalie in the following seasion (now March 2012).
My leafs are pretty good, but I really don't have my franchise goalie yet and this guy is really making a case as the starting goalie for the 2012-2013 season.

My only real advice with goalies is to take it SLOW. Don't rush them.

I havent had much luck with Goalies, any "hot" prospect that I have brought up early has struggled - and when I let them wallow as a backup they struggle as well. I did have decent luck leaving Jimmy Howard in the AHL but I dont think that he really peaks as anything special - so it is hard to tell.

I'll second that.

Most of my young players havent been developing over the last 3 months at all... Some of them have 2 or 3 attributes increased by one, but it has nothing do to with the position they play: for example deflections for defenders. Players on the farm, in the ECHL, in juniors team - no one is improving, with the only exception of my most talented prospect.
Are 3 months not long enough to judge them? I'm a bit afraid that there could be a problem with my copy of the game or something, because this is really strange.
Coaches on my farm team suck, but I cannot add a new GM to control it. I can only choose from NHL and national teams. Don't know why.

I'm absolutely positive that there is nothing wrong with your copy of the game in regards to your prospects not developing. There are many things that will factor into that, including the prospect's potential, the training regimen, the coaches, their ice time and how they're used. Sometimes 3 months might be enough and in some cases it won't be. You should really consider reading through the training thread and this one. It's going to help.
If your farm coaches are that bad, it's a big problem. If they're not good, they're not going to be able to develop your prospects as well as better ones would. The reason you're only able to select NHL and national teams is because of how you set up your game. In the beginning you're asked which leagues to enable and for the ones you enable you're allowed to select Standard or Enhanced. Always set all leagues to at least Standard. If you're playing a league in North America I would suggest setting NHL, AHL, ECHL, and the Canadian junior leagues to Enhanced.

My farm coaches are just as bad as AHL coaches usually are... Most of them have attributes for coaching defensemen/forwards of just under 10. The sad things is that no one is developing well, no matter what the factors are. Neither farm players, neither junior players.
I tried to loan out farm players to ECHL-teams with better coaching, maybe it helps.

Normally with players I like to keep them in the minors for at least 2 years and then bring them up without giving them any real responsibility. Just have them play on a line.
I find that goalies are different and I usually take anywhere from 3 to 4 years before making them a backup to a veteran and that's only if they are ready for the NHL.
So far it's been working for me. And if someone just doesn't seem to workout after two or three years, oh well, draft someone else.

Unless you get a #1-2 pick, you are probably better off letting your prospects develop in the juniors/ahl for 2-3 years minimum. Keep in mind that most players don't peak until age 25/26. You've got plenty of time for them to finish their junior careers and get some AHL time before bringing them up. Even then, you don't want to throw them on the first line to start. Third line/pairing with veterans around them is good place to start. They can get minutes and develop. If they show they can handle more, ease them in slowly. It's rare to have guys jump right in and be top 6/top 4 players.

I just started a season with the Caps using Lidas 1.3. I sent Backstrom to the AHL, but right now he is playing with Ovechkin and Clark while Nylander is injured. Has anyone else done that with him? He is only 20, but obviously he has pretty good stats. I figured I'd try him out in the AHL for a while, in 9 games he had a 8.33 rating. So far on the top line, hes got 7 points in 6 games with a 7.0 rating, but who wouldn't put up decent points with Ovechkin?

My problem with my prospects is I'm not controlling my AHL team, so the coaches are bad. The one's I've put on my NHL team (and even my older players) have all been increasing steadily because I've got a good group of coaches. The thing is I've got a good team with a lot of depth, so I don't really have any room to bring up some of my prospects to help develop them. Some are developing faster. Jordan Eberle pretty much hit a brick wall and stopped developing at 20. He was highly touted in juniors on my game, but hasn't done much since.

This is why when I start a season, I always take the AHL and ECHL as well as the NHL. So when I take my Sens I can take control of Bingo and Elmira and develop the players the way I want them developed.

I would be interested in the player developing experiences of those who don't control their affiliate teams... I don't really think coaches could be that important. CPU teams have the original, poor farm coaches and I don't think that the developers of EHM wanted to make a game in which the computer cannot develop its own prospects. I only played one and a half season, but I guess years after the beginning, the computer also manages to somehow turn its prospects into NHL-players.
If I'm wrong, then it's really sucks that if you started your game with the detail settings set to the lowest and cannot control AHL teams, then you don't have the chance to develop players properly.
One solution could be to use the saved game editor to increase the skills of the original farm coaches a bit... Not to the region of 20, but to 13-14 (I guess it's possible for an AHL-team to hire coaches without a team with skills like that). Hope the editor won't corrupt the saved game.

Jesus Christ... I just realised that there is a "Selected league" screen accessible from the options menu...

Very nice.

Thats a really good, idea, I never thought of that. I tried controlling the AHL and NHL team, and it took too long for my computer to load each day, so I'm stuck controlling the NHL...but I'll try editing the coaches instead.

Hey i've got a problem i never encounter before. I'm starting my 2013 season and my goalie are tired, ok this happen somethimes to me, but i'm in middle octobre and there still tired, but really tired like 17% and 55%. I put them on general, usually it work, but they getting more tired, then i put them to rest and it's worst!
Still my #1 goalie ( Lethonen ) in 5 games he got no defeat, 3 shootout, .25 GAA and .993%. I really don't know what's going on but maybe i should wait a little bit to see if to put them to rest will work. But if you've got some advices tell me!

Did his condition increase at all once you put him on "Rest"? Maybe go to his profile and request a trainer's report?
