Spotting regens

Hi, I'm fairly new to the game and I was wondering how do you spot regens? I've seen a lot of threads about it but they only say that you need to compare stats and look at the retirement date of the old players. I have two problems with that:
1- How do you check the attributes of someone who is already retired?
2- How do you check when a certain player retires?

I've been trying to spot regens with height, weight and nationality using google but it very rarely works... Thanks in advance!
