Hits/Takeaways

Post by merkava »

What do I have to do so my players get more takeaways? I just can't get my players to have more than 40-50 takeaways a season, I traded for Zajac (just an example, it happens with everyone) who was averaging around 150 takeaways a season but I just couldn't get him to have more than 40 on my team. Same thing also happens with hits, all my players just get a ridiculously low amount of hits even if I set their hitting to very high.

It feels like I've tried everything.

Whats your highest Takeaway total currently?

Big physical defenders or forwards with good defensive attributes seem to work the best at taking away the puck.

It depends. If you're using EHM: EA, I've noticed that the hit count is ridiculously low. My team averages around 15 hits a game and I have them set to play a physical game.

Nah it is not a low hit count in the game. Check the real life playoffs stats. Varies wildly from building to building in real life as to what is a hit. THere is no standard.

For instance...for all the press about Calgary-Vancouver and how physical a series it was...the last place team in hits in the NHL playoffs Vancouver and third last is Calgary. Yeah..because they are 2 Canadian cities whose stats guys actually know and record hits based on what they are....separating players from the puck. Ferland did not get credit for a TON of hits that he appeared to have because the puck was nowhere near the guy he hit...already moved 2-3 seconds prior to Ferland arriving. In Long Island, Minnesota and LA those would all be inflated into hits.

So EHM has a standardized way of recording a hit.THis is the way it should be.

Now....not saying hits are not too low just saying they do not need to be as high as alot of people think.

Yeah, batdad, the way it should be =D>
Maybe Hanzal should know that too - 4 hits after 12 games with setting at 'very hard'

close to nothing in this game is realistic, but to each its own

Lets keep your personal feelings out of this duranium. No need for it.
Read what I said....I said "not saying hits are not low in the game, saying that since there is no standard in real life for what is a hit, that it really does not matter...as would have to code the way every silly rink calls it in real life. Imagine coding what Minnesota calls a hit for a wild player and what it then calls for visiting players...and doing this for every single team in the world. Every rink has two different standards, and all of their standards are different from every other rink.

In other words...sure if you just read the stat line from the NHL as to what a hit is recorded as....then the hits are low. But when they actually get around to STANDARDIZING what a hit is....there will be alot fewer of them recorded. Why? Because so many of the hits do not do what the hit in the definition of hockey is intended for...separating player from the puck,.

Half of Hanzal hits are not hits in real life. At least half. They are charges, late hits, interference and head shots. Same goes for guys like Clutterbuck, STevens, Cooke, Ferland, Bieksa, Ronnie Kenins, Raffi Torres. Nothing to do with the intention of what a hit is for.

Once NHL and other leagues sort that out with stats guys and standardize...hit count will be much less.

I hear what you're saying. It's been long known that the 'Hits' statistic is not an NHL stat recorded by the NHL, but a stat normally recorded by team staff.

But I would like to point out, from a game perspective, that the amount of hits seem to be down quite a bit from EHM2007 to EHM: EA.

I just completed a game against the Bruins. Both sides had 10 hits. Milan Lucic only had 1 hit in the game. That's a little bit far fetched. For my Sens, Erik Karlsson lead the way with 4 hits.

Again...as I said....Real life stats do not correlate to what they are in reality. They are totally biased by the arena you are in.

Have a look at this link...it is the player you brought up in real life:

Lucic game by game hit stats

All games on that list with 7 hits? At home. ALl 2 of them. (2)

Games with 5 or 6 hits. 9 home 8 road. (17)

Games with 3 or 4 hits...8-12 (20)

SO that leaves 41 games with 0,1, or two hits. Half the games he played in the regular season.

Now...that being said I do understand that in the real life situation vs EHM EHM is under in terms of hits. All I have said....is how do you expect this to be coded when the arenas are clearly so different in what they call a hit? Not possible without hours upon hours of work.

You really cannot pick out individual games and say so and so only had 1 hit and there were only 10 in the game and correlate it to the numbers for the whole league over an entire season. However...it is true that there are fewer hits in EHM than real life. Well...at least recorded hits. Minnesota sees a guy touch someone and it is a hit that gets recorded. Brushing against each other nowhere near the puck. This is IMPOSSIBLE to code into the game.

Unfortunately when a stat is not based in solid definition in real life, it is not possible to make it solid in the game. Close yeah, and probably closer than what is there right now.....but nowhere near what would be considered exact to real life.

I think the question was not related to real life. Zajac had 150 takeaways in game so the topic starter traded for him. In his team he only had 40. The question was: how come and how can I let Zajac perform more takeaways. Unfortunately I don't know an answer. It probably has to do with tactics and defensive formations. Maybe 1-4 where Zajac is the centre applying loads of pressure?

Something(s) have changed but I don't know what. In 07 I used to get a normal amount of hits. Probably league average or better. In EA I get out hit almost every game. The number of hits for all teams seems to be a lot lower as well but the AI seems to do better with hitting. My tactics and type of teams are very much similar to 07. Big strong defensive minded players playing a defensive hitting game. I'm guessing someone will figure it out but since we are Early access and the game changes every 2 weeks it might not matter much at this point. Heck, I'm still having trouble wrapping my head around the much lower ratings that players get. Too bad they won't accept less money for being so poorly rated :-D
