Contract renewal issue while managing a WHL club

So I am in my first year managing hometown Portland in the WHL and around Christmas time I am alerted that I have a good many players with contracts expiring in 6 months.
Now, none of these players are my 20 y/o overage players, and, generally speaking, once a team has a player in major junior, they don't have to be resigned, so, I am wondering what happens at the end of the season? They should still in theory be on my protected list and should still be able to be brought to Portland to play even if they aren't under contract?
Just doesn't seem to make a ton of sense.
