What counts as a NHL rookie?

Post by hluraven »

As the title really, what counts as a rookie in EHM, both for Calder voting and for your own team records.

I'm pretty sure if a player plays a few games one season they can still count as a rookie the next, but I have no idea what the limits are.

Thanks in advance

A rookie must be 26 years old or younger by September 15 of their rookie season.

A rookie cannot have played any more than 25 games previously in any single season,
nor have played in more than six games in two separate preceding seasons in any major professional league.

That can't be right :-?

Unless if the NHL only counts their own leagues as "major professional league"?

I think they might mean just the north american major professional hockey leagues, since Gretzky never won the trophy. I could be wrong though... :dunno:

But that would also mean the AHL then, in which case you can't spend two seasons in the farm before getting called up if you want to be taken as a rookie... :-k

"Major professional sports league, or simply major league, is the term used in North America to refer to the highest professional division in any team sport." That's from good ol' wikipedia (yeah, i know, pretty reliable sources i got here, right? :-D ) and i think it might be that as the NHL is considered the highest professional division in North Amenrican hockey at the moment, this could be the case. I'm a bit confused with the North American terminology, but i can't think of any other explanation to this.
