Can anybody help me simulate a one season game? (Again...)

Post by archibalduk »

This follows on from my previous thread last December. Unfortunately I lost some of the seasons I had simulated in my hard disk crash and so I can't continue with my project without simulating more seasons. All is not lost though because the work I had already done has helped my refine my technique/process in extracting the stats and collating them into a spreadsheet.

Seeing as more seasons are needed, I thought I may as well start again but this time using 2009/10 rosters so that it's more up to date. So, as with last time; I was wondering if there were any users who would be kind enough to simulate one season for me. All you need to do is to email (or use Rapidshare/Yousendit/etc) to me your saved game at the end of the season - I don't need you to export any stats or anything else. All I need is the saved game.

Here's how to help

1) You must use Lidas 2.3 Rosters.

2) Create a new game with the NHL, AHL and ECHL all set to enhanced. Don't select any other leagues.

3) Choose whether you are going to do a West or East Conference test season. If you are doing a West Conference test season then add a human GM for every West Conference team. If you're doing an East Conference team then add a human GM for every East Conference team. In other words, you will be adding 15 human GMs. It doesn't matter what name you give to the GMs!

4) For every human GM created, click on "General Manager" from the top horizontal menubar and from this menu click on "General Manager Options". Change the vacation options as follows (the ones I don't list can be set to default):
  • Set how to handle status of players: Allow changes
  • Set how to react to receiving an offer for players: Reject All
  • Set who to make offers for: None
  • Set when to return from vacation: 16 April 2007
5) From this same General Manager Options window, click on "Go on vacation".

6) Once you have set each GM on vacation, the game will start simming until 16 April 2007. Once you have reached 16 April 2007, save the game, put it in a ZIP/RAR file and then email it to me: archibalduk AT gmail.com

I would like to simulate the West Conference five times and the East Conference five times. So I will end up with a total of ten saved games. If you are interested in helping then please post here to let me know whether you will be doing East or West. :)

The aim of my project

The aim of my project is to look how attributes (particularly the current ability attribute) affect players' stats. From this I hope to create a huge database of players (initially just with the NHL) and the stats they achieve in the regular season. I will then compare these with the real life 2009/10 stats to see how accurately EHM is simulating each player. Once I have done this, I will be looking at how I can increase/decrease key attributes to improve the accuracy of the stats produced by EHM.

So in summary, I'm looking to achieve the following:
  • A database of EHM player stats and current abilities to act as a guide to how CA affects stats. This will help us when creating new players because we'll know roughly how well they will perform if we copy a certain player's CA/stats.
  • A comparison between the stats generated by EHM and the real life stats. This will help identify players that need to have their CA/attributes increased/decreased.
  • Hopefully an attributes update for any roster project - e.g. Lidas or the TBN update.
I plan to upload and share the spreadsheet/database once it is finalised.

Ehh... I guess there is not so much help of my simulation after all... when already simulating I just realized that you may not have any use for a EHM Mac version save?

I have no idea. If you have an early version of the saved game now then email it to me and I'll give it a shot.

Thanks to the both of you for offering to help. Hopefully a few more will pitch in too and then it'll leave me with fewer seasons to sim by myself :D

I PM'd you the address to download the zip if you want to give it a try. And there's no need to thank, you guys have been doing such an enormous work for all of us it's only reasonable to try to participate whenever one can.

Actually the fact that I'm pretty sure you can't use my sim p*sses me off so badly I may have to check if I'm able to do the sim again with Win version of the game

So I sent you 2 emails with download links (2 eastern ones). Now I try to sim one more (western).
One sim took about 4.5 hours on my computer manufactured in previous century. 4.5 hours of 100% CPU usage for EHM :-D

Wow thanks McQwak! I've downloaded your two seasons. And thanks to the rest of you for your offers.

Kuulapaa - I've PM'ed you about your file. Seems there was some issue uploading it as the file is only 300kb.

Seeing as we have quite a few volunteers, I'll start a list of who is doing what so we know what spaces we have:

West 1: Kuulapaa (assuming the Mac save is compatible...)
West 2: McQwak
West 3: 23qwerty
West 4: Astmakameli
West 5:

East 1: McQwak [done]
East 2: McQwak [done]
East 3:
East 4:
East 5:

I haven't put my name on the list yet but obviously I'll be doing some this week too!

Wow I can't thank you all enough for your help! An especially big thank you to McQwak for the number he has done! :notworthy:

Unfortunately Kuulapaa's Mac save didn't work. So this means there's just one East and one West to do. If anybody wishes to do either then let me know. Otherwise I'll start up EHM later this week and will get 'em done.

Thanks for the saved game, Watts555.

I'll start putting the data into Excel and then I'll sim the final West game.

At the moment I'm still inputting all of the stats from each season into Excel. I aim to have this done by the end of this coming weekend. Once I've done that, I'll need to tidy things up a bit and then I'll import the real life NHL stats. Then it's the quite simple task of writing the formulae which will compare the EHM stats with the real life stats. I would hope to have this complete within the next 7-14 days...

I'll release it at that point but then I also want to add extra information to it; such as each players' CA rating. This will allow you to look up any combination of stats and see what sort of CA will achieve that. E.g. if you want to see what sort of CA you will need for a Centre who plays 50-60 games in a season, scores 30 goals, 20 assists, etc etc then you'll be able to look that up on the spreadsheet.

Sure, if you have the time to do it then I'd be very grateful. Otherwise I'll do it when I have a spare moment. Whatever suits you

Well I've been hard at work on this over the past ten days but I've now hit a big problem: The statistics page doesn't show players contracted to an NHL team that are currently on an affiliate roster. I was hoping that there was another screen which would show this info but alas not. It serves me right for not looking into the issue sooner - it's one of those things I've thought I must check out but I've been concentrating on getting the stats into Excel that I'd not given it much priority

Anyway, I've now found a screen which lists every single player contracted to each NHL team along with their stats (NHL -> Player Stats and then you can filter by team). Now that I have this new screen, I'm going to have to start importing the data all over again. So it's going to take longer than I had first anticipated...
