REALLY silly question.......sorry!!
Do I need the full version (i.e. upgrade from trial version) inorder for my 3.04 patch and roster updates to work etc??

No. You can use your demo version and apply all patches and addons as you wish. The game just simply ends on certain date (not sure exactly which date it is) the same way as you wouldn't install anything. No difference.
