Early October 2008



October 1st

The Groups were drawn today for the World Junior Hockey Championship, and Czech Republic has drawn into Group A with Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and France.



The ISS released their Preliminary Rankings for the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, and one IceDogs was ranked!

LW Radko Tvrznik - #197



The top-ranked player was Regina Pats center Sam Reinhart, followed by Yugra Khanty-Mansiysk defenseman Alexandr Uvarov, and Edmonton Oil Kings center Conner Bleackley.

The top-ranked OHL Player is Barrie Colts defenseman Aaron Ekblad (#6).



The ISS also released their Preliminary Rankings for the 2009 OHL Priority Selection!

The top-ranked player was Oakville Rangers center Dale Pike, followed by Lindsay Muskies defenseman Emyle Gauvreau, and Toronto Young Nationals center Ryne Rodgers.



The ISS also released their Preliminary Rankings for the 2009 CHL Import Draft!

The top-ranked player was Finnish defenseman Juho Siren (JYP Jyvaskyla, Finnish SM-League), followed by Belarussian center Oleg Strakhov (Yunost, Russian Minor Hockey League), and Kazakh defenseman Petr Kamensk (Bars, Russian Minor Hockey League).



October 5th

The IceDogs remain at home to play host to the Saginaw Spirit. Chris Festarini stopped 24 of the 29 shots he faced, and though the IceDogs led 4-3 with just five minutes left in the game, the Spirit scored three goals to take the victory!

The IceDogs travel to play the Kingston Frontenacs. Backup goaltender Jesse McCullough will get the start in goal for Niagara. Jesse McCullough stopped 26 of the 31 shots he faced, and though the IceDogs scored early in the third period to tie the score 4-4, the Frontenacs scored twice more to take the victory!

The IceDogs return home to play host to the Owen Sound Attack. Chris Festarini stopped 37 of the 42 shots he faced, and the Attack took an early 4-0 lead, and the IceDogs never got going in the loss!

October 12th

The IceDogs remain at home to play host to the Sudbury Wolves. Chris Festarini stopped 29 of the 32 shots he faced, and though the score was tied 3-3 midway through the second, the IceDogs exploded, scoring six unanswered goals to take the victory!

The IceDogs travel to play the Brampton Battalion. Backup goaltender Jesse McCullough will get the start in goal for Niagara. Jesse McCullough stopped 29 of the 30 shots he faced, and the IceDogs took a 2-1 lead midway through the second, and held the Battalion off the rest of the game!

IceDogs winger Ryan Horvat will miss a week with an arm contusion.



Former IceDogs goaltender Mark Visentin is released by the Dallas Stars and is now a free agent.



Belleville Bulls center Brendan Gaunce is named OHL Player of the Week. In 2 games he scored 3 goals, and 4 assists.



October 14th

The IceDogs travel to play the Saginaw Spirit. Chris Festarini stopped 18 of the 19 shots he faced, and the score was 0-0 going into the third, where the teams exploded for five goals. Luckily, Niagara scored four of them for the victory!

October 18th

The IceDogs travel to play the Peterborough Petes. Chris Festarini stopped 20 of the 22 shots he faced, and the IceDogs took a four goal lead into the third, and despite the Petes picking up a couple goals in the final frame, they never really got into the game.

The IceDogs return home to play host to the Oshawa Generals. Chris Festarini stopped 22 of 23 shots he faced, and the IceDogs took a 5-0 lead into the third, and though the Generals scored in the final minute to spoil the shutout, they were never really in the game!

The Finnish Four Nations Under-20 Tournament continues today! Russia defeated Czech Republic 3-2 in the first game of the tournament way back on October 20th!

Finland defeat Sweden 3-1! First star honours would go to Finnish center Alexander Barkov, who recorded an assist. Second star would go to Finnish goaltender Atte Tolvanen, who stopped 24 of 25 shots in the victory. Third star would go to Swedish center Sam Henning, who scored a goal.



IceDogs winger Joel Wigle has been named to the OHL All-Stars for the game against the Russian Selects!



November 8th

The IceDogs travel to play the London Knights. Chris Festarini stopped 21 of the 24 shots he faced, and though the Knights scored midway through the third to tie the score 3-3, the IceDogs scored two goals in the final five minutes to take the victory!

November 9th

The IceDogs return home to play host to the Peterborough Petes. Backup goaltender Jesse McCullough will get the start in goal for Niagara. Jesse McCullough stopped 20 of the 21 shots he faced, and in a tightly contested game, the IceDogs scored the game winner in the final seconds!

November 16th

The IceDogs remain at home to play host to the London Knights. Chris Festarini stopped 37 of the 40 shots he faced, and though IceDogs defenseman Drake Milne scored late in the third to force overtime, Knights winger Carlyle Berube scored just seconds into the overtime to give London the victory!

The IceDogs return home to play host to the Guelph Storm. Backup goaltender Jesse McCullough will get the start in goal for Niagara. Jesse McCullough stopped 31 of 33 shots he faced, but Storm goaltender Spencer Neal stopped every shot on him, shutting out Niagara for the victory!

Second star would go to Finnish defenseman Ville Pokka, who scored a goal, and an assist. Third star would go to French goaltender Louis-Etienne Paquet, who stopped 22 of 24 shots in the loss.

The IceDogs remain at home to play host to the London Knights. Chris Festarini stopped 29 of the 30 shots he faced, and though the Knights scored first, the IceDogs scored twice in the second period, and then held the Knights off the rest of the game in the victory!

January 6th

The IceDogs return home to play host to the Oshawa Generals. Chris Festarini stopped 24 of the 26 shots he faced in the game, and though the Icedogs scored first, the Generals would score three unanswered goals to take the victory!

The first game of the Swedish Four Nations Under-20 Tournament will be played today! The rest of the tournament will not happen for weeks. I was also not given the chance to set my roster before this game, so most of the players on my roster are not available for the game because they are playing in the CHL!

Team Cherry defeat Team Davidson 4-3 in a shootout at the CHL Top Prospects Game! First star honours would go to Team Cherry center Alexander Kristofferson (Seattle Thunderbirds), who scored two goals. Second star would go to Team Davidson winger Reid Gardiner (Prince Albert Raiders), who scored two goals. Third star would go to Team Cherry center William Eldh (Kelowna Rockets), who recorded an assist.



IceDogs defenseman Roger Cote played 19:58, was -1, served 4 penalty minutes, and had a shot on goal 1 hit and 2 shot blocks for Team Cherry!

IceDogs winger Radko Tvrznik played 21:42, was -1, served 2 penalty minutes, and had 4 shots on goal, and a takeaway for Team Cherry!



IceDogs defenseman Luke Mercer resumes full contact practices after recovering from his olecranon bursitis.

The Belleville Bulls have clinched a berth in the OHL Playoffs.



IceDogs winger Scott Pokulok has been suspended two games for a vicious cross check to the chest of Sault Ste. Marie winger Pier-Antoine Courcelles in the third period of Niagara's 3-1 victory over Sault Ste. Marie.



February 17th

The IceDogs remain at home to play host to the Sudbury Wolves. Chris Festarini stopped 25 of 26 shots he faced, and the IceDogs got out to an early 3-0 lead, and held the Wolves off for the rest of the game!

The IceDogs travel to play the Ottawa 67's. Chris Festarini stopped only 1 of 4 shots he faced before being pulled in favor of Jesse McCullough, who stopped 30 of 36 shots the rest of the way, as the IceDogs were dominated from the opening whistle!

Winger Joel Wigle's loan to the Niagara IceDogs ends, and he returns to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

While the Winnipeg Jets selected Yugra Khanty-Masiysk defenseman Alexandr Uvarov with the third pick!

The top-drafted OHL player was Barrie Colts defenseman Aaron Ekblad, who was selected by the St. Louis Blues with a 14th Overall Pick!

July 1st

The OHL released their 2009/10 Season schedule today, and the IceDogs will open the season at home, playing host to the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors on September 22nd, the Brampton Battalion on September 24th, and the Sudbury Wolves on September 29th.



July 2nd

The IceDogs announce their schedule of preseason games, starting with a three game tour of the Western United States!

The IceDogs announce the signing of overage defenseman Cory Genovese. Genovese played last season with the Kitchener Rangers, where in 67 games he put up 14 (6+8) points, and was +12, with 96 penalty minutes for a 6.94 AvR.



The IceDogs announce the signing of overage defenseman Adam Pelech. Pelech split last season between the Erie Otters, and Brampton Battalion, where in 65 games he put up 23 (7+16) points, and was +3, with 34 penalty minutes for a 6.98 AvR. His NHL Rights are held by the Colorado Avalanche.



July 7th

The IceDogs announce the signing of goaltender Kenton Howse. Howse was the IceDogs 10th Round Pick (199th Overall) in the 2009 OHL Priority Selection.

The IceDogs announce the signing of center Pierre-Marc Duchesne. Duchesne was the IceDogs 10th Round Pick (196th Overall) in the 2008 OHL Priority Selection. He played last season with the South Ottawa Canadians of the Eastern Ontario Junior B Hockey League, where in 60 games he put up 86 (40+46) points, and was +42, with 96 penalty minutes.



July 8th

Former IceDogs goaltender Chris Festarini has signed a 2 year contract worth $475K with the Winnipeg Jets.



July 9th

The IceDogs announce the completion of a trade with the Belleville Bulls, sending defenseman Neal Graves to the Bulls in exchange for an 8th Round Pick in the 2010 OHL Priority Selection!

Graves spent 2 seasons as an extra defenseman for the IceDogs, playing in 32 games, and putting up 6 (2+4) points, while being -4, with 16 penalty minutes.
